Charity of the Month: Tishrei 5770

Though the month of Tishrei is known for the High Holidays, it's also the month of the holiday of Sukkot. Sukkot (plural of sukkah which means hut) reminds us of the temporary dwellings the Israelites had during 40 years of wandering in the desert. It also is the Fall harvest festival and reminds us of the shacks the farmers would build in the fields. We build our own sukkah for the holiday to remind us of our temporary/impermanent nature, and our dependence on God for survival and sustenanace.

Sukkot reminds us of those who need shelter. YACHAD is an organization in DC that helps to improve the homes of the poor. JCADA is a local organization that supports victims of domestic abuse and violence and provides emergency shelter. And of course Shaare Tefila is trying to build a permanent home. All are worthy of our attention and I urge you to check their web sites.
