A Summary of My Talk on Shabbat June 16
Clearly the recent policy of the United States border patrol authorities is complex and challenging. Just by reading this article from the National Review and this article from the NY Times highlight the difference of opinion regarding this policy. Children are being separated from adults some times because adults coming into America use children as shields to play on the sympathy of the authorities. But more often than not the authorities separate children from their parents.
No matter our stance on immigration, asylum, and refugees clearly this policy is morally wrong. But to exacerbate this moral outrage the attorney general of the United States, Jeff Sessions, quoted the Christian Bible to justify the policy! By quoting Romans chapter 13 "for there is no authority except from God and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God", Sessions disregarded the age-old American institution of separation of Church and State.
So much is wrong and outrageous about this policy and Sessions' comments. I don't even know where to begin to express and articulate my outrage as a human being and as a proud American citizen. We have no choice but to voice our protest and end this inhumane policy. We are the richest and mightiest country on earth - a proud democratic nation founded on moral and ethical principles. Our obligation is to serve as an example to the world which looks to us for guidance and direction. We need to voice our protest so that this policy is changed and that we can feel proud to be an American.
